Overview/review of Wilson's rework.
I believe Klei played it pretty safe with the Wilson rework with no new downsides to our main mascot! The thought of a skill tree in DST is a pretty weird concept to all us old DST vets, but its been executed (for the most part) pretty well.
15 insight points total unlocked over the course of 160days survived total. Dont need to survive the whole 160days in a row in one server and points are unlocked forever and can be reset/respent everytime you choose Wilson when starting a server.
Wilson's new skill tree:
TORCH BRANCH:
Spoiler
This is probably the weakest skill branch in terms of usefulness however being able to rely sololy on torches for early game exploration and torch throw's stationary light for nighttime combat encounters is pretty convenient even for veteran players.
If starting day 1 this branch can be ignored for veterans however it really shines for all players when joining public servers late autumn or any other season where there might not be many natural resources left around portal. So dont sleep on this branch if joining late to pub servers where you dont know people. I recommend going all or nothing for this branch otherwise you are kinda wasting points. (You can drop the last light range skill if you must.. 4unit radius is enough)
ALCHEMY BRANCH:
Spoiler
This is Wilson's argubly most useful skill branch as even you arnt playing Wilson you might switch to him just to take advantage of his transmutes then switch back. I would recommend atleast perking into his gem line to be able to craft theIridescent Gem... this is fantastic allowing Wilson to rush into lunar content at anytime he wants regardless of moon cycle/having a starcaller staff.
- Transmute ore 2: Being able to craft nitre from gold has massive late game uses. (Mass produce gunpowder, easy renewed salt licks etc)
- Transmute ore 3: Being able to craft marble from cut stone allows Wilson to hammer loads of pig houses then craft marble armour with football helmets to rush Dragonfly without needing healing to kill her. Craft iridescent gemfrom her gem drops. Boom ancient archives are active by like day8-9 which scratches that speedrunning itchnicely!
- Icky 1: Crafting meat from morsels allows access to hambats from killing spelmonkeys in ruins or rabbits on surface. Pretty convenient.
- Icky 2: The beefalo wool to beard hair and back is meh... not the most useful skill an can be left out if needs be.
- Icky 3: Ok-esh if you want to convert hounds teethto bone shards for buckets of poop. Or bone shards to hounds teeth for early game sewing kit.Its a small indirect buff to farming but you can skip this skill.
- Transmute: logs to 2 twigs is fantastic if you plan to tame a beefalo as Wilson, providing plenty of easy access food to feed ur beef. Allows easy crafting of a campfire no matter if you are in the ruins without trees. The indirect buff to beefalo taming is something all Wilsons should take advantage of!
The only time i wouldnt recommend putting the majority of your insight points into Alchemy is if you join late into a public server where survival is more important than the gem crafts.
BEARD BRANCH:
Spoiler
Honestly passively growing really strong winter insulation is really really really underrated. Beard insulation 1, 2, and 3 are the must have skills if you plan to play Wilson, beard at tier 3 with insulation 3 becomes almost as effective as a beefalo hat which is insane! Being able to not worry about thermal stones or winter gear at all is great. One weakness to these skills (and the beard in general) is that you will take more damage from overheating if hit by klaus' fire spell due to cooling down slower.
- Beard growth 1 is good if you join day 4-6on autumn. For a full beard at start of winter.
- Beard growth 2 joiningdays 7-9.
- Beard growth 3 joining days 10+ or joining in the middle of winter.
If you join before day 4 dont waste points on beard growth. With the increased insulation skills you might even get away with a tier 2 beard for the start of winter.
The beard storage is just ok. 3 extra slots sounds great but its only for food. I personally rarely carry more than 2 types of food to eat when exploring. But i guess its nice to have separate slots to keep healing food in if you are like me and drop your backpack to make use of body slot equipment (mag amulet, marble armour, dreadstone armour etc). It is worth the one insight point to get.
AFFINITY:
Spoiler
Finally the shadow courier skill. Unlocked by having 12 skills and after killing ancient fuelweaver once. Definitely worth getting this skill if you can.
- Reduces damage by shadow creatures 10% (stacks well with dreadstone armour)
- 10% boost in damage to Celestial champion and any lunar related mob (mushgnomes, shattered spiders etc).
- Transmuting dreadstone to pure terror and back is good if dont want to waste a green amulet in creating both dreadstone helm and armour.
- If you ever choose to refight Nightmare werepig you can convert all the dreadstone to pure terror, pure terror to about 44-58 nightmare fuel. Gives Wilson a new fun way to farm nightmare fuel every 20days.
My skill choice summary:
- If joining day 1: beard insulation 1-3 and beard storage. Transmutation, gem 1-3, ore 1-3, icky 1-3 and shadow courier. Best skills if you have the benefit of a leisurely first autumn to explore and research things.
- If joining lateautumn/winter/spring: The entirebeard branch (except beardstorage), entire torch branch (except torch range 3), transmutation, ore1-2. I believe these are the best skills for survival if joining late. Being able to craft flint from rocks and gold from nitre allow for more optionswhen resources arescarce. Torch branch helps save on precious grass and twigs that are important for earlysurvival.
My one main issue with the rework is the 160days it takes to obtain all 15insight points (i cheated getting them ). This is wayyyyy too long to expect anyone (veteran or noobie) to be forced to play Wilson before unlocking his full strength. 80 Days would be reasonable.
Overall i call Wilsons rework a win. It definitely isnt as flashy as some other reworks but Wilson is atleast practical and competitive with the rest of the roster now especially for rushing lunar content. While also setting up the possibility for more skill trees for any new characters that i hope are in the works!
Anyway yeah, Wilson be alright now!
