Omaha police make arrests in homicide, 4 juveniles charged (2024)

Omaha police are investigating a homicide after a shooting late Tuesday turned deadly. Officers responded to an apartment complex near 94th Plaza and Cady Court just before midnight. Police found the man, identified as 64-year-old Mursal Jama, shot in the stomach. He went to Bergan Mercy Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died, authorities said.Four juveniles are accused of multiple crimes including homicide.An 11-year-old and a 14-year-old were arrested for criminal homicide, two counts of robbery and three counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony.A 13-year-old was arrested for criminal homicide, two counts of robbery, three counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony and a warrant for unlawful absence.A 17-year-old was arrested for criminal homicide, two counts of robbery, three counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony and one count of possession of a gun by a juvenile. All four of the juveniles were taken to the Douglas County Youth Center.Neighbor Jill Iverson said her son's security camera caught the whole thing. "You could hear the pop, and somebody yells, 'did you shoot?' and then they get in the car and they take off," Iverson said.Around 1:15 a.m., Omaha police were alerted to a pursuit entering Douglas County, involving Nebraska State Patrol, Otoe County deputies and Cass County deputies, according to investigators.The pursuit involved a black Kia that was stolen during the homicide, Omaha police said. The vehicle crashed near 46th and I streets, and four people fled from the vehicle, according to authorities. State troopers took one person into custody, but officers were unable to locate the other suspects.Around 3:56 a.m., officers responded to a call for a suspicious party near 46th Avenue and J Street involving three boys outside a residence, who were asking to come inside, investigators said.The boys fled when officers arrived but were taken into custody after a short foot pursuit, according to Omaha police.Investigators said the four boys, between the ages of 11 and 17, were taken to Omaha police headquarters for questioning. Iverson was shocked to see how young the kids were. "My first thought is where are their parents because when my son looked at the video he said mom these kids are like 10 or 11 years old, they're not that old," Iverson said. She said this isn't the first time her neighborhood has been impacted by crime, there have been many car break ins. This shooting happened just feet from Iverson's patio, leaving her afraid.
