How do I extract just the last 5 characters in the sheet name to appear on a label in a family?
I have a long string of text for the sheet name & when I put in call out views this spills out the callout head. I'm only interested in the last five characters in the sheet name appearing in the call out head, so how do I edit the label in the family to accommodate this?

What do you mean the callout head?
Are you talking about view names on the call out tag on a sheet?
You can label them something other than the actual view name. Not sure if that's what you mean?

Re: How do I extract just the last 5 characters in the sheet name to appear on a label in a family?
I mean the sheet name appears in the view callout head. I thought I'd need to modify the callout head family, by adjusting the label parameter by adding some "$ edit" text string to exclude the prior characters. I didn't consider the view name parameter. I guess changong the label to look up the view name parameter. Still I'd like to not edit the vanilla call out tag.

I guess I still don't understand what you mean by "sheet name as it appears in the view callout head".Originally Posted by Norton_cad

This is usually a view name not a sheet name.
And if that is the case, my screen shot is OOTB edit to the view title (if you don't want to use the actual view title).Unless you mean something else, please explain or give us a screen shot maybe(?).

Sorry, Revit doesn't offer a string function that allows us to limit how many characters are displayed.
The labels are affected by their width in the family however. You might be able to adjust the width of the label and the justification so that only the number of characters you want are shown (will fit). It will probably be unreliable thought because fonts aren't created equal. If you are using a font that isn't monospace (all characters use the same amount of space/width) then a shorter sheet/view reference will probably squeeze in another character or just part of it.
Then again if I'm looking at a drawing that is only showing five characters of a much longer view reference then I might be frustrated that I can't find the sheet and detail it is meant to point me toward. It might be ugly but better to show it all?

Re: How do I extract just the last 5 characters in the sheet name to appear on a label in a family?
Revit prevents this from being done in a few ways. First, this kind of function (altering the name based on a rule) would fall under a Calculated Value concept, which is not supported within the Tag/Label environment, unfortunately. Secondly, the View title family itself doesn't even allow for Shared parameters. The use of Title on Sheet parameter, as noted above, is definitely the best way to tackle this goal. You can manually do this from your View Schedule or, if you have a way to round trip the data, the Excel formula is "=(RIGHT,5)". This video explains the bit about the family and shows the methods explained: http://www.screencast.com/t/pTVoJgol
