Lee's Summit teacher dies from illness

A Lee's Summit teacher died Thursday at the Baptist Medical Center. She had been ill since March.
Linda P. Mapes, 47, Lee's Summit, started teaching first grade at Prairie View Elementary School in 1989 then moved to Underwood Elementary School when that facility opened in 1991. She went on disability in March because of her illness.

Mapes won a Lee's Summit Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Teaching award in 1995.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 28, at the First Baptist Church of Raytown, 350 Highway. Friends may call 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

A counselor shared information with second graders about Mapes' death at Underwood on Friday and sent a letter home to parents with suggestions on how to help their children cope with grief.

Underwood's staff is planning to create memorial for Mapes at the school but details have not been decided.
